Fat? A Good Thing?... Not!

An article in the Wall Street Journal completely turned the problem being overweight into a good thing. As the article suggests, a little bit of excess fat isn't necessarily a bad thing. Thanks to the studies that were conducted by the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and the University of Ottawa, people who are slightly overweight have less chance of dying than those of normal weight. Hard to believe right? Well some researchers had their doubts as well and turned focus on the BMI's (Body Mass Index) flaws. As researchers suggest, BMI lumps together all body mass, including bone, muscle and beneficial fat and doesn't necessarily only tell you the dangerous fat your body might have. To cut the story short, BMI isn't the best way to measure to the dangerous fat you body holds.

Let's take a moment to actually appreciate the humor of this picture.
Anyways, what if Batman was obese? Gotham would be in one hell of a disaster with all those villains running wild. There is always something going on so imagine how slow Batman would be to respond to the bat signal. By the time he arrived at the crime, the villains would be long gone. There would be no athleticism when it came down to fighting man to man. No city needs an obese hero to be patrolling the streets. Batman needs to be in shape to stop those villains creating chaos in Gotham City. Batman needs to be... well... Batman!

Stigmatization of Obesity

We tend to perceive obesity as simply an issue of personal responsibility but don't see that it is a complex condition. This video is about persistent bias towards people who are over weight. Obesity is not just a problem of health, it is a problem of society. It's a problem of how society treats people who are obese. This video is more about the perspective of the life of obesity and what dangers that come because of the view society has towards being obese. People who are obese are the few people in society that is allowed to be stepped all over on. This film is how society got to the point where it is now when it comes to its own perception of obesity; from random strangers to people's own family and as time goes by, discrimination towards obesity grows and grows more negatively.

Hypothesis

To be honest, I don't have any relationship with this disease we call obesity. I guess I don't have any personal experience with it but I have noticed the increase of obesity. I at least encounter two or three people per day who happened to be obese. I am however one step ahead with this project. Back in high school in my first responder class, I had to to pick a a current event that is harming and affecting America and write about it. In another occasion, one of my teachers back in high school was obese but she actually did something about it. She had a surgical procedure done to help with the weight loss. With the experience of coming across obesity at least once a day, it has inspired me to speak on obesity and help prevent it. We do need to do something about this disease because it is spreading and fast.

Obesity In Children

(Non-text Media)

This a quick three minute video on what obesity has done to the children in America. This video develops a a target audience throughout of it which blames the parents for the obesity in the children. It gives a quick run of risks of being obese. This video however targets children and not the adults. The adults are the one's to blame for the development of obesity in children by buying fast food instead of cooking more at home but ends up giving a solution on how to prevent it from developing and keep it from growing.

An Overweight Society

Obesity is the number one health risk facing America but a lot of people don’t even know the definition of the word obesity. Obesity is generally defined as an excessive amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass 7 but where do you draw the line from obesity to just being overweight? According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the term overweight refers to body weight that is at least 10 percent over the recommended weight 5 for a certain individual. This website goes more in depth about the ongoing debate about what to consider obese and overweight. This website also helps people understand what the causes of obesity are and what you can do to prevent it for yourself, family, and loved ones. According to the website, “Weight gain and obesity are caused by consuming more calories than the body needs – most commonly by eating a diet high in fat and calories, living a sedentary lifestyle, or both.” It goes beyond and gets more in depth about what these high diets do to your body and what types of damage it does as well. This website is also very useful for the reason that it gives you information on how to combat obesity, whether it’s with medication or surgical options. It gives you information on what each option’s risks and gains are. It shows what option is more suited for you depending on what body type you have and what your body mass index is. Obesity is a very complex condition this website helps clear any question or curiosity you might have about the topic.
